Louisiana is a state located in the southern region of the United States. It is the 25th most populous of the 50 United States. Louisiana is bordered by Arkansas to the north, Mississippi to the east, and Texas to the west. It is the only state in the U.S. to have political subdivisions termed parishes, which are equivalent to counties. Its capital is Baton Rouge, and its largest city is New Orleans. Louisiana is known for its Cajun and Creole culture, colonial history and distinct French Creole architecture. Its landscapes are full of swamps and marshes, longleaf pine trees, and Bayou Lafourche, which is the longest natural waterway in the state.
