Charleston was founded in 1670, initially known as Charles Town in tribute to King Charles II. The city prospered at Albemarle Point on the west bank of the Ashley River (now called Charles Towne Landing) before being moved in 1680 to its present location, which quickly emerged as the fifth-largest city in North America within a decade.

As the county seat of Charleston County and the largest city in the region, Charleston is situated in the state of South Carolina and serves as the focal point of the Charleston-North Charleston metropolitan area.
